Things LHS Athletes Must Know!
1. SAFETY DURING MEETS AND PRACTICE.
1)
During practice make sure you never walk or jog
in lanes 1 or 2. These lanes are reserved for faster runners.
JOG in lane 3 and walk in lane 3 or 4.
2)
Never
walk across the area where high jumpers are practicing or shot putters are
throwing!! IT ONLY TAKES ONE THOUGHTLESS ACTION TO RESULT IN AN
ACCIDENT.
3)
When running in lanes 1 or 2 and overtaking a
slower runner do NOT shout or try to get the slower runner to move out of your
way. It is your responsibility to PASS
ON THE RIGHT in a safe manner.
Conversely if you are aware that a faster runner is overtaking you, make
sure you DO NOT VERE RIGHT OR LEFT.
A crowded track needs predictable behavior from all athletes using it,
so this RULE IS VERY IMPORTANT. AGAIN
IT IS UNACCEPTABLE to yell “track” or any other demand in an effort to
clear other practicing athletes from the track.
To yell “track” IS ACCEPTABLE when a spectator, basketball
player, wrestler or cheerleader is walking on or near the track and poses a
danger. In this instance exercise
EXTREME CAUTION and expect these individuals to fail to understand or respond
appropriately or even respond at all.
Better to lose a second than risk an injury.
4)
Running or jogging in the REVERSE DIRECTION ON
THE TRACK is inherently dangerous and should only take place under the DIRECT
SUPERVISION OF A COACH. This means
that the coach should approve this and watch/monitor the execution of reverse
running.
CLERK of the MEET - There will be one slip and any of the entrants into that event may approach and turn it in to the CLERK of the MEET. This is called checking into your event.

1. It is critical that you listen for "THE CALL" for your event and make sure you get the entry slip from Coach Crosby or Coach Tremaine and turn it into the CLERK of the MEET in a timely fashion. Being out of the arena or in the girl’s room does not constitute an excuse for not turning in the entry slip. If there is a problem a Coach can turn it in but the clerk always want to see all the contestants from a team as a group to issue HIP NUMBERS and check for uniform violations. If you then leave the area and miss your event then you have used up one element of your participation in the meet. See participation later in this document.
2. Remember,
anyone entered in the event may turn in the entry slip and get instructions
from the Clerk of the Meet. Check
the slip and make sure it is correct before you turn it. By this I mean
the names and numbers are correct and all Lexington athletes are present and planning to compete.
3. What is a HIP NUMBER you ask, it is a
stick on number that helps in the timing and judging of the meet, one is worn on
your left hip and possibly one on your left shirt upper chest area.
4. See the HIP#s
in the picture. They allow the electronic timing operator to identify you from
the side.
Apology - When and to whom is an apology warranted?
APOLOGY – Do not apology to me for a competitive effort EVER,
it makes me feel as if you expect me to be critical of your best effort. We
prepare together, share the moment together and proceed gently and with
understanding into the future together.
However, if you let your team and teammates
down by getting disqualified for wearing jewelry, not paying attention, acting
inappropriate, swearing or taunting then these actions are your solely. Direct your apology to your teammates and
expect consequences appropriate for your actions either from the meet officials
or the coaching staff.
PACING RULES –
You can get a teammate disqualified if you assist him/her during a
competition. One of these infractions is
called PACING a team member. How can you
cheer for a teammate and NOT get disqualified?
There are two main points.
1. A stationary position, plant your feet and cheer.
2. Outside the track oval, you are not to be in the infield except to compete so
when you are in that position refrain from cheering. If you do turn your attention to the oval
plant your feet.
PICTURE TAKING DURING A MEET CAN GET YOU OR A TEAMMATE DISQUALIFIED
UNDER SOME SPECIFIC CONDITIONS, WHAT ARE THESE CONDITIONS? Reviewing the pictures or
video during the competition, especially the HJ and SHOT PUT.
TAUNTING NO – BEING A GOOD SPORTSPERSON YES!
1. What are your instructions regarding taunting?
2. What are the consequences?
You MAY
cheer for a competitor from another team but if your ACTIONS are interpreted as
an inappropriate gesture or say anything of a derogatory, gloating or sarcastic
nature you will be disqualified.
<<You play the official, is this joy or taunting?
1. What
are you allowed to drink during the meet?
What are the specific prohibitions?
2. What
are the penalties?
3. Why
is this such a BIG deal?
1. You CANNOT consume food or flavored drinks
inside any field-house.
2. If you are observed
doing either you will be suspended from the team. Remember however, you
may have and consume H2O from a water bottle. I judge water by its lack of color, its
transparency. Vitamin water or H20
flavored water are NOT allowed.
3. We risk the possibility of permanently
losing our privilege to use these facilities, so its a BIG deal.
4.
The Reggie Lewis Track Facility has a rule that athletes NOT EAT OR
DRINK ANYTHING, except for WATER, outside designated locations. The designated location is near the lobby and
the area immediately surrounding the food court location. We respect these rules WITHOUT
EXCEPTIONS. LET ME BE CLEAR, I will immediately suspend you from the team
if I see you leaning over sticking your face into you bag and come up
chewing. If you want to eat GET YOURSELF UP, go to the lobby and munch
away. Also let the drink you are
consuming be clear, if it is colored or tinted then my response will be the
same.
5. SO WATER YES, ANYTHING ELSE NO.
BUS TRAVEL REGULATIONS for away meets. What are the two ways that you may be
transported to or from an away meet?
1.
You must go on the bus, this is how you get to a meet, with your
team. Exceptions are cleared with the AD
and the coaching staff when this results in a ridiculous situation i.e. you
live in Boston and must come to Lexington to ride a bus to Boston.
2.
Your parents may ONLY bring you to or from an away meet, if you notify Coach
Crosby before hand and present the AD, Naomi Martin, a note FROM YOU PARENT/GUARDIAN
beforehand. This method of
transportation sometimes is essential when there is a family emergency or
issue.
3. ALL OTHER
TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS are NOT ACCEPTABLE. If you arrive at a meet and have not done
1 or 2 above you will not be allowed to participate. See team expectations for
consequences.

General Rules for all
Events |
·
All competitors
must wear uniforms of the same color and same general style. ·
Initial
checking for compliance with uniform regulations occurs at the time the
athlete checks in with the Clerk BUT if this official does not notice, it is
still your responsibility ·
Officials are NOT responsible to insure you
are compliant, YOU ARE! ·
If a clerk
misses your uniform violation and you are disqualified for it later, DO NOT
come to me with “but the clerk didn't say anything,” remember you cannot transfer your responsibilities
ever! ·
Again, it’s
your responsibility to wear a legal uniform. ·
It is the
coach’s responsibility to inform athletes re: uniform rules ·
All socks are
legal: high or low, striped or plain. |
